Michael Joseph Jackson || 1958-2009
"If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can be dealt with."
This man died two years ago today. He has been such a massive, massive influence on my life, his music still remains timeless, and nobody can argue that. You can't go to a real party or disco without one Michael Jackson song coming on. Billie Jean was the first video by a black artist to get regular airplay on the music channel. In 1984 he won eight Grammy’s – the joint highest amount ever won by one person in a single year. He gave his first public performance at the age of 5. Thriller is the world’s best-selling record of all time with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.
The news of his death caused Google to overload and crash. Twitter crashed. As did Wikipedia. Amazon reported that all of Jackson's and Jackson 5's albums had sold out completely within minutes of his death. The British soap opera EastEnders added a last-minute scene, in which one character tells another about the news, to the June 26 episode. He became the biggest selling album artist in the USA in the 12 months that followed his death, selling over 8.2 million albums and a total of 35 million albums worldwide.
We've all attempted to learn the dance to Thriller. We've all watched in awe as he achieved an anti gravity lean. Live. We've all said it don't matter if you're black or white, and for that, I thank you Micahel Jackson, and I miss you.
